Blast from the Past: Nick Gomez's 510
The story of this 1972 Datsun 510 starts a few years ago in 2007. As Nick was driving by a yard sale, he saw the tail lights of what he thought was a 510. He turned around and left a note at the persons house since he wasn't home. Luckily, Nick got called back and met with the owner. It turns out the owner had purchased it back in 1971 and drove it from Fontana to Los Angeles for 15 years but decided to park it after it started making a few noises. The crazy thing is that the day Nick saw it, it was the first day the original owner parked it outside since 2002! A day sooner and Nick would've never seen it at all!
Nick was scared that the original owner would overcharge him since it was a low mileage and clean 510, but was shocked when he only asked 500 bucks for it! Nick didn't have a job at the time but sold everything he had and mowed a few lawns so he could afford it. 3 weeks later he went to the DMV with the original owner and the car was now under his name. He got a flat a few days later and that is where the modding bug hit him. One of the first things he got was a Grant steering since he wasn't feeling the stock one. He wanted to do so many things, including a body kit, but luckily he was busy with an Accord.
He wanted to drift the 510 and that became a purpose for his build. He says the 510 is his daily but he uses it for many other things like mountain runs and drifting, even though he claims hes not too good at it. Nick's favorite thing about his car is that "It's me to the fullest, bullshit everywhere. Any Idea, I try it." This is very true since the car is a reflection of him. There are stickers placed everywhere and he has made lots of things on his car such as a cool skateboard wheel gas pedal.
The one thing he dislikes about his car is that his dad tried to roll his fenders with a baseball bat! Nick is one of those guys you meet that is always willing to help anyone and always has a positive attitude. People like him are the reason the car scene is so great and his open mindedness is something the car scene needs. There are lots of things he wishes to add to his growing mod list (see the bottom for a mod list) such as a roll cage, M-tech spoiler, cup holders, LED lights for everything, and to paint and tuck the engine bay to name a few.
His car dynoed at 125hp and 129 lb of torque, which is enough for him for now. Nick has created a fun daily driver/drift car/track car that reflects his own style and personality. He hopes to continue modding it but never lose the daily driving trait that we all love so much.
